MS and Lyme Disease

I met a man last summer when I was volunteering at a local marathon. He sat down next to me as he was taking a break. What was interesting about him is that he looked to be a healthy, middle aged man who was in shape. His story tugged at my heart strings, though. He was diagnosed with MS in the late 80s. He said it was horrible, and he felt he was too young for a disease like that. He was on disability, couldn't hold down a job, couldn't provide for his family.

The worst part is that he was mis-diagnosed. What he really had was Lyme Disease. Once he was treated for the actual disease, his symptoms improved so dramatically it was life-altering. He says he still gets stiff joints sometimes, and the treatment for Lyme Disease was horrible. He didn't go into too much detail about it but it included intravenous antibiotics for months.

I wonder how many more MS sufferers out there really have Lyme Disease instead of MS. If you, or anyone you know suffers from MS, it might be worth taking a look at Lyme Disease. The symptoms are almost identical. And, more and more doctors are learning about Lyme Disease and proper ways to test for it. There are many co-infections associated with Lyme Disease, and sometimes antibody tests do NOT show up positive. In fact, 60% or more are inaccurate, according to one double blind study. Be sure to get the western blot (IGG and IGM) and NOT the ELISA test.

Good luck.
