rhauptman's posterous http://rhauptman.posterous.com detox your body - live a healthy life without toxins! posterous.com Wed, 16 Mar 2011 04:45:16 -0700 The NookColor - a review of my first 2 weeks of having one! http://rhauptman.posterous.com/the-nookcolor-a-review-of-my-first-2-weeks-of http://rhauptman.posterous.com/the-nookcolor-a-review-of-my-first-2-weeks-of So, my beloved got me an early birthday present (6 weeks early). I knew I wanted the Nook and when eBay had the $50 coupon 2 weeks ago, at the Barnes and Noble eBay store, it was totally worth it, for $199. (Our complete total came out to be about $216).  Then, I purchased a case, screen protector and cover on eBay for about $20 (lavender with butterflies and sparklies, of course!!)

Why did I choose the Nook Color when there are a lot of other eReaders out there?

1) Compatible with the library system - I have a library card for the 2 largest county library systems in Minnesota, giving me access to THOUSANDS of free books to read);

2) It was touch screen, and a color screen (sure, the iPad is, too, right? Well, this is a fraction of the cost and runs on Droid... you can hack it so that you can use any Droid app you want, and I am not an Apple user), also the LCD screen may give me eye fatigue, but it hasn't yet, I am very used to staring at a screen for hours at a time... but then again, I have only read about 4 books on it in the past 2 weeks).

3) The other "extras" on the NookColor just rock. Sudoku... LOVE IT! File system for my  music, pictures, and even video, woohoo! I love the Wi-Fi (It doesn't have 3G like the regular Nook does, and like Amazon's kindle does, but that is ok).

I do have to mention that learning the library system to check out free books had a huge learning curve that was a bit difficult because I didn't understand it. I at first tried to install applications directly onto my nook (like adobe digital editions). You don't do that. You install it onto your PC. Get set up with an adobe account, link it to your digital library account, check out books through the adobe digital editions, then, plug your nookcolor into your PC through the USB port, and drag and drop your library books onto your nookColor.

So, I have 4 books waiting to be read on my Nook Color... from the library (not to mention dozens of free books I downloaded from the NookStore). That is my max per library... and I have about 6 more waiting to be ready for download. The only books I have purchased so far was the Scriptures (Bible, Book of Mormon, etc) and that was $2.99 -- pretty cool!

The charge (battery life) I have heard is not even close to that of the regular nook or the kindle. But so far it hasn't caused me trouble. I let it charge at night every couple of days. No problemo.

Overall, I am ecstatic with it. I LOVE it!!!
